Review: Ice T – OG Original Gangster

Ice T – OG Original Gangster is and was one of the roughest gangsta rap albums of 1991 which uses a balance of gangsta rap, sex rap, spoken word, thrash metal. One thing his album has is a balanced level of subject material. There are no songs worth skipping as each song is on point lyrically and production wise. However this album is more gangsta rap oriented than his last album. Everything from hunting to pimping can be heard in this album.

This Ice T album is a legendary old school rap album that any fan of Ice T or gangsta rap should have in their collection. Ice T – OG Original Gangster is one of the best gangsta rap albums of 1991 and is a golden poignant classic that is still relevant today. This is one of the greatest hip hop/rap albums of all time! You know this shit is dope.

Back in 1991, Ice T told us how he was living on the song New Jack Hustler. This makes sense because he was a hustler at one point in time. The song explored the tumultuous life of a hustler and the dangers that come along with being a hustler. The uptempo beats and fast paced tempo really set the tempo for the song. This is one of the best and most memorable songs on the album. Ice T composed “New Jack Hustler” for the film New Jack City.

Ice T has nothing to lose and much to gain. The drive for him to make money is strong to the point of being ingrained like a migraine headache. You muthafuckin’ right. Why? Cash money ain’t never gonna play out. You gotta deal with this ’cause there’s no way out. You try to flex. Bang! Another nigga drops.

Ice T earns so much cash he’s gotta keep it in Hefty bags. All he thinks about is keys and Gs. All he loves is dope and dead presidents. Imagine that. Him working at Mickey D’s (McDonald’s). That’s a joke because he’s never gonna be broke. You don’t like his lifestyle? Fuck you! He’s rollin’ with the New Jack crew.

Ice T calls out the flaws of capitalism when he says the ends justify the means. Here Ice-T subscribes to the political philosophy put forth by Niccolo Machiavelli in his Renaissance masterpiece, The Prince. Because let’s be honest. The science of capitalism which you teach to the people on the streets today with the ‘ends justifying the means’ mentality ain’t happenin’. (A little economics lesson here.) Sound crazy? Well, it isn’t. The ends justify the means. That’s the system.

This song had some of the most memorable and quotable lyrics for a rap song from 1991 that still stuck inside of people’s heads to this day. All of which are still relevant today.

The ends justify the means, that’s the system
I learned that in school then I dropped out
Hit the streets, checked a grip, and now I got clout

I had nothing, and I wanted it
You had everything and you flaunted it

What’s up? You say you wanna be down?
Ease back, or motherfucker get beat down
Out my face, fool I’m the illest
Bulletproof, I die harder than Bruce Willis

Turned the needy into the greedy
With cocaine, my success came speedy

That’s a joke cause I’m never gonna be broke
When I die there’ll be bullets and gun smoke

Sleep on silk, lie like a politician
My Uzi’s my best friend, cold as a mortician
Lock me up, it’s genocidal catastrophe
There’ll be another one after me, a hustler

Ya don’t like my lifestyle? Fuck you!
I’m rollin’ with the New Jack crew

There were even some creative and humorous one-liners used in the song.

The ends justify the means, that’s the system
You had everything and you flaunted it
Hustler, word, I pull the trigger long
So many hoes on my jock, think I’m a movie star
Kiss my ass, bust the cap on the Moet
Why? Cash money ain’t never gonna play out
‘Cause I don’t wanna hear that crap
What’s up? You say you wanna be down?
In my brain, I got a capitalist migraine
When I die there’ll be bullets and gun smoke
Ease back, or motherfucker get beat down
That’s a joke cause I’m never gonna be broke
Sleep on silk, lie like a politician
My education’s low but I got long dough
Life is weighed on the scales of a triple beam
Is this a nightmare? Or the American dream?

Ice T talks about how he raps with smooth lyrics over smooth rhythms on the song Mind Over Matter. He hits the track hard with the vocal tone. Overall Mind Over Matter is one dope track filled with intellectualism.

It’s been a long time. Since Ice hit you with a freestyle from the vaults of the Ice files. So kick back, relax, and watch as Ice melts wax. His rhymes are so hot to the point that they can literally melt wax. Therefore, Ice-T can melt wax literally or he can figuratively make the track melt. He’ll flow slow and still twist your tongues up. Rock the house from night until the sun’s up. Because it really ain’t how much you say. It’s what you say. He ain’t got no fucking time on the mic to play. Ice T writes rhymes with addition and algebra. This is mental geometry. So you gotta have mind power like the fellas say.

Don’t even come at him talking that weak mess and popping that bullshit. A lot of doubters said it couldn’t be done by him. Them same suckers are ow looking from under him wondering what he did. Ice T didn’t play himself. He respected his fans.

Sometimes Ice T writes his rhymes at night and conjures new techniques. The white paper and blue lines excite his mind. Not allowing him to stop the rhyme until the whole book’s complete. Then he writes on the back of the sheets. He made the tracks clever with his brothers in street crime. Now they’re checking more bank than ever. They put their minds together.

Syndicate’s making the move with the ski masks. So now you realize you underestimated the Ice. You know this shit is dope. But that’s alright because he knew he’d make it in the end.

I rate this album 5/5*****!
