Mtume – You, Me and He is one of the best funk soul albums of 1984 next to Zapp – The New Zapp IV U. Mtume’s 1984 album was filled with uptempo love cuts with conscious lyrics and jarring vocals backed by some high quality production. Honestly we took this album for granted because there are so many sweet love songs on this album that were overshadowed and overlooked. Yet these songs were not so innocent but were not too raunchy for their time. For example, You, Me and He dealt with infidelity. RIP to the late great James Mtume.

You, Me and He dealt with infidelity at a time when infidelity was frowned upon and not considered fashionable or popular. The song was about a wife cheating on her husband and the husband wanting to work it out in order to get out the love triangle. It’s like the song Slick Rick – Mistakes of a Woman in Love With Other Men before there was ever a Mistakes of a Woman in Love With Other Men. Or mistakes of a man in love with another woman. Vice versa. People slept on this song. Those hard knocking 808s, basslines, chords, synths, and snares are what made the song perfect.

The wife has another in her life. He’s her love and she is another man’s wife. She tells the husband to try and understand there’s another person who is a man in her life. This leads to the husband and wife to become involved with a love triangle filled with infidelity. She admitted it.

The husband was too blind to see that the wife had been cheating on him with another man. Then he knew things had changed because when they made love, she called out that other man’s name. He never thought something like this would happen to him. There is undoubtedly so much tension. This pain they feel grows each day. Neither the husband or wife want to let each other go.

C.O.D. (I’ll Deliver) was a polite and politically correct euphemism for Cum On Demand and Cum On Delivery. The is why the term “C.O.D.” is abbreviated. A man tells his woman he will make good sexual romance (sexual intercourse) with her as well as give her the good loving she needs.

The woman knows and is fully aware she wants him. She knows just how to flaunt it. Of course the man already knows this. The man will make good sexual romance with her as well as give her the good loving she needs. She will turn him on all night. He’ll be deep inside her softly.
