Review: Oddisee – To What End

Oddisee has returned to give hip hop a breath of fresh air and revival with his new 2023 album To What End. The production is very structured over a chill jazzy upbeat soundscape and rap lyrics. Oddisee gave alternative hip hop a much-needed revival of fresh air with this album. Conscious rap meets alternative hip hop and jazz hop on this Oddisee album.

This gifted lyricist broke doors with his rap lyrics and poetry. This is rap music with real meaningful lyrics. Rap music that has lessons, guidance, and meaning. Oddisee managed to keep his lyrics relevant by staying on topic for the most part. He manages to stay consistent on songs such as The Start Of Something and How Far for instance.

The Start Of Something was the opener that explains how Oddisee abstained from the lure of fame by staying focused on achieving his dreams. Never in need of saving to what end.

Oddisee started off for the love of things. He abstained from the lure of fame by staying focused on achieving his dreams. The secret is a love drug of dreams. When you’re both the fire and the fuel that you heat with, the brighter the flame the more you’ll tire enduring pain. And that’s when you burn out or learn of another source. But of course, external motivation’s a cheap trick. What does it all matter if it’s less or more the same? The idea of more within itself is sort of strange.

He fights to sleep and achieve his dreams. Now he could take a life with ease. He learned that challenge is a test as he writes his answers with pen. Smeared pages in the book of his life span. That is why and how he took a stab at making life better with mic stands. That’s why Oddisee is balanced within. This gifted lyricist learned how to break doors with his rap lyrics and poetry.

Oddisee has done more than he’s ever thought about. Oddisee gained confidence in an industry swarmed in doubt. The music industry is swarmed with doubt because people will not always be successful as musicians or be paid properly. His accomplishments in music were made of experiences void of clout. He was not chasing clout by getting caught up in the wrong things by staying focused on achieving his goals. That is what these lyrics mean and are a reference to.

How I’m seen & how I’m heard is not the reason why I’m working
Why perceive what I am worth by what you need is trying first
To be accepted putting second my belief’s a lie that hurts
I’ve done more than I thought about
Tasted five star fruits of labor & ordered out
Gained confidence in an industry swarmed in doubt
Accomplishments made of experiences void of clout
Only thing left is me living I’m calling out
I’m going off, how to make a million without going soft
Can’t appreciate the winnings never knowing loss

Oddisee doesn’t have enemies. Just misunderstandings. If you were ever a friend to him, you would understand it. Those dishonest pretending to be were harmless and enraged by his empathy when discovered he wasn’t damaged. That type of traffic he circumvented to never let attraction to a muse deter the mission he was on. The truth is seldom cemented about this.

He doesn’t even flirt with ideas despite being a rapper and a gifted lyricist. His words are actions. He’s not the one to listen to for a worthless caption. Quote him when your back is against the wall and the worst could happen. You might not beat the odds but you got to meet the odds/odd.

It took time to accept that he was worthy of admiration. Oddisee was brought up in a family not caught up in celebration. Associated patience with bread in need of breaking. Money didn’t change the people he loved. When money came, the love didn’t. That is what these lovely lyrics mean. “With people that I love, when money came didn’t change it”

Oddisee said some of the most memorable and gifted lyrics in this song. Here are some of his memorable and gifted lyrics.

Your favorite rapper is just cattle I will snap at the throat
Weaponized emotion Pisces with trident
Took a stab at making life better with mic stands
A Shepard can’t be in the shadow of goats
A Groove theory experimented at night
I don’t have enemies just misunderstandings
Associated patience with bread in need of breaking
The knowledge of ancestors to plan be better

How Far explained Oddisee’s motivation in staying dedicated and focused on his music. The gifted lyricist explained how he stayed focused and motivated.

Now or never. He doubt it’s ever that dire. Oddisee is only motivated when he gets close to the fire. He comes from a long line of barley trying and getting by. In other words, he comes from a long line of generational poverty. That is why Oddisee is a noble fighter. You won’t be surprised if you apply and you get denied for government benefits. Children of compliance got defiant and this is why. It’s hard to sympathize crackers dying from getting high when crack was in its prime drug abuse was a kin to crime. America’s design on who do and don’t get to lie in front a grand jury or a choir of people crying. He is not using an excuse. Just correct truth.

These lyrics explained how Oddisee was trapped in America’s system of poverty by design.

Children of compliance got defiant and this is why
It’s hard to sympathize crackers dying from getting high
When crack was in its prime drug abuse was a kin to crime
America’s design on who do and don’t get to lie
In front a grand jury or or a choir of people crying

He got’s your children standing next to where you left. You may move away from him but to the music you step to. Amir’s feared in light when’s it night. But when’s it night they want Oddisee. What he wants is equity and equality.

The lyrics exposed the hypocrisy of racism in the United States based on a love/hate relationship and American double standards. The same white people who listen to music composed by black people are the same people who are racist against black people. Yet the same white people who are racist against black people don’t want black people in their society.

I got your children standing next to where you left ooh
Move away from me but to the music you step to
Black flight the only non white in front row
Amir’s feared in light when’s it night they want O
Show full good girls hype when I come close
She said she use my vinyl surface to blunt roll
Edison ain’t know it would be medicine
Peddled in by the melanin to European’s fleeing their skeletons
In need of a reconning we’ll I recon I’m selling them
Addiction in a civil suited garment I settled in
Live from colonies of cotton, tobacco, sugar and rotten planning
Harvesting a promise it wasn’t rooted when I was planting
Equity not equality I’m demanding
Your past or my future, who wants it more
Panic

I come from a long line of barely trying and getting by
You won’t be surprised if you apply and you get denied
Children of compliance got defiant and this is why
It’s hard to sympathize crackers dying from getting high
When crack was in its prime drug abuse was a kin to crime
America’s design on who do and don’t get to lie
In front a grand jury or or a choir of people crying
Somеwhere in between a you and I and thе you is silent or obtuse

Many Hats explained the many hats Oddisee has to wear as a person. Not just as a producer and rapper. He wrote this song from his own perspective. To many people he is many things. He knows enough how to hold a bluff when the goings tough. At times he feels like collapsing but holds it up for show and such.

To many people Oddisee is many things. But never himself and that’s beginning to bare strain on him. His mother‘s hands, his father shoulders, his friends ears. You name it. He disappears when at his worst as he hides in work. He owes his career to turning hurt into ideas. To persevere’s a double edge he runs ahead. He knows enough how to hold a bluff when the goings tough. At times he feels like collapsing but holds it up for show and such.

He was blowing up and became a star. But as it happened, he faced fear of rejection from his audiences. He feared of getting 86ed any second like The Challenger. His baggage was just adding up. Oddisee feels his greatest attribute is why he is lacking too. But his pride can be misleading when he hides that he is depleted.

Ghetto To Meadow explained how it’s a struggle not to hustle. The song highlighted struggles in poverty. Ghetto To Meadow featured Freeway from Philadelphia and State Property. Yes that Freeway.

It’s a struggle not to hustle. There ain’t no telling if you’re dying when you live by the weapon. That’s aggression if you grew up where expression is a sign that you ain’t tough enough to see your deep depression as blessing. Coming from a history of violence. Filled with misery and triumph. Lack of vision leads to buying and selling illegal substances. All you’re left with is questions that don’t ever get obliged or answered. If you speak up. that’s a threat. If you digress, then you’re compliant.

Freeway made it from the ghetto to the meadow. Freeway came up from nothing into something. He was young and thieving in the ghetto. He grew up around some heathens trying be Robert De Niro. Toting that Tec with the air holes or the .38 special. It’s a blessing Freeway changed his life and switched to this rap shit. It’s expensive just to book him these days.

More To Go picked up where Many Hats left off in terms of subject matter. Oddisee explained how he has to wear many hats as a person. Not just as a producer and rapper. He knows he’s lived many lives. But he has got so much more to go.

Oddisee never thought he’d be at peace when he was near defeat. He just got used to sending beats to get something to eat since he was a producer. Another person in the verses written years prior. From space heaters to heated spaces, he is near fire. There are different versions of work in progress of his persona. Collected wisdom from their wreckage.

What Oddisee has become is currently his finest. He is proud of the person he is today. But within time it takes its place as just a piece of mind. He knows he’s lived many lives. But he has got so much more to go. The newest ones always the hardest.

In his first life, he was a dreamer born into illusions. In his second life, he became student working on improvement. Oddisee because a preacher to protest our institutions in his third life. He became a teacher to progress the moment in his fourth life. Then in his fifth life, he became a leader to protect conclusions. In his sixth life, he was a cheater to finesse those still in destitution. During his seventh life, he was a healer to correct what he had just abusing. By his eighth life, he is currently completing as his stress is reducing. Maybe what’s left is losing count of all accounted for. Forgetting his collection is a feat but a profound reward.

He found the lure of life exploring what he couldn’t cause. Oddisee traveled far and wide before he ever charged to rhyme. Effected by the random less a sceptic when you’re met by newness. His open mind would visit what the artist in him couldn’t stop to find.

I rate this album 5/5*****!!
