Review: Lasgo – ‎Some Things

Review: Lasgo – ‎Some Things

Lasgo’s debut album ‎Some Things took electronic music by storm with the upbeat and unusual Europop sound and Eurodance sound back in 2002. This was way before Europop took over and trance music was popular with musicians such as Darude, Crazy Frog, and Sylver. The album catapulted Lasgo into international stardom with songs such as Something, Alone, and Pray. The album incorporates dance music into upbeat electronic instrumental music with the pop sound.

Peter Luts and David Vervoort were the producers for this album. Peter Luts and David Vervoort do some fantastic work on producing electronic and trance music. Both producers mange to balance out the sounds of Europop and Eurodance on the album while blending in the trance sound. Futuristic trance music is used in songs such as Something, Alone, and Pray. Peter Luts and David Vervoort produced those songs. Electronic music from Belgium never fails to disappoint people. You can expect to hear many love songs and soul searching songs on this album.

The album starts off with an instrumental that is an electronic soundscape. Intro serves as a presentation and precursor to Something. The song slowly transitions into a trance. Key and synths are angelic, breath-taking, and futuristic sound. The keys and synths copy some of the musical notes from Something.

As for the trance portion of this song, here is how the song slowly transitions into a trance. First you have the keys and synths. The keys and synth practically looped for nearly a minute. Right at the 0:56 duration mark in the song is where the song transitions into a trance. Angelic synths start to kick in here. Trance does not occur right at the 0:57 duration mark as some people will have you believe.

Something was their trademark song which became an international breakout success in 2002. The song ruled the charts for the 2002-2003 term. The song incorporates dance into electronic thus creating a Europop trance fusion with the loud electric synths, thumping heavy bass, thick beats, and angelic chorus. Something is known for its angelic chorus and loud electric synths along with the thumping heavy bass and thick beats. Most notably the angelic chorus, loud electric synths, and Evi Goffin’s vocals.

Too bad Europe does create or compose trance music such as this anymore. You don’t hardly every hear trance music like this anymore which is sad.

Something is about having strong feelings for someone. It could be someone you love, cherish, or admire. You want to hold that person in your arms and never let go of them. You need them. Your feelings for them are still strong. However there is something that they hide from you. You see it in their eyes. Is there a reason why?

Lyrics to the pre-chorus detail how you need that person by you.

[Pre-Chorus]
Hold me in your arms
Hold me in your arms
And never let me go
Hold me in your arms
‘Cause I need you so

Blue uses a bit of Europop, dance, and trance. The song has some upbeat dance sounds despite the title. Of course anything that is dance or Europop is bound to be upbeat. That goes for nearly anything trance related too. Heavy synths and beats lace the track.

The song Blue is about true love which has a theme of hurt and desperation. The song shows how powerful true love is.

Nothing seems to hurt you when you are close to the person you love. No one else can touch you like the way they do. You wish a love such as this could last forever for both you and that person. However in reality such a love cannot exist. Both you can see each other feeling blue. Feeling sad and desperate for each other. Longing for one another while in love. Both of you are feeling blue. Tears keep on falling when they cry. Tears keep on falling when you cry. You still feel their love for you is true. That is the power of true love.

Alone was their second single which captured the international music market by storm due to the upbeat and unusual Eurodance sound. Alone uses a wide array of electric synths and beats over upbeat electronic and dance music. The song definitely upbeat uses electronic and dance sounds.

Alone has similar subject matter to Something. However this song has a vibe, feeling, and tone of loneliness. Loneliness is the theme for Alone.

If you had one more chance to change your life, then you would never let go of the person you love. All you friends keep telling you that you should leave that person for a while. So you must show your love to them. The short lyrics to Verse 2 explain this. “All my friends keep telling me/That I should leave you for a while/So you must show your love to me/And tell me what you feel”

You even thought that person had feelings for you too. You know you were wrong. Of course you know you’ll be by their side when they do care.

And now you stand here alone in the dark without them. There is nothing more that you would want but to be with them. Now you can’t stop thinking of them or thinking about them. You’re life is suddenly filled with darkness as you stand alone without them.

The chorus gets dark and lonely.

[Chorus]
And now I stand here alone in the dark
Without you
There’s nothing more that I would like
To be with you
I close my eyes, but I can’t stop
Thinking of you
And now I stand here alone in the dark
Without you

Searching is a song which calms down the mood for the album due to the trippy guitar sound and trippy nature. A flanger effect is used on the guitar notes. Flanger helps the guitar notes reverb with a slight echo. Searching has similar subject matter to Something and Alone. This song has a vibe, feeling, and tone of loneliness. However this song is not about loneliness. The song is about soul searching. Loneliness and soul searching are the themes for Searching Alone.

You ever have that feeling that you’re never going to find what you’re looking for? Well that is what the song Searching is about.

You ever have that feeling that you’re never going to find what you’re looking for? Well that is what the song Searching is about.

You’re searching for this place where you don’t need to worry about anyone or anything. Searching for this place for where you don’t feel sorrow. Don’t need to think about tomorrow. A little time to yourself is what you need to change your mind. You need to be on your own. This loneliness feels strong deep inside of you.

A few of the lyrics to Verse 1 use words that rhyme such as “sorrow” and “tomorrow”. Notice how the ‘-orrow’ suffix is used to make both words rhyme with each other. “Where I don’t feel sorrow/Don’t need to think about tomorrow”

Verse 2 gives us a clue where the loneliness lies. Verse 2 also explains how deep the loneliness really is.

[Verse 2]
I need a little time
So I can change my mind, yeah
I need to be on my own
This loneliness feels strong
Deep inside of me

You’ve been searching for a long time but you’re never gonna find what you’re looking for. This is all you need and want. Won’t ask for more. You don’t really mind to leave this all behind. It doesn’t feel like home.

Ugh. Yes. I Wonder is yet another love song. However this is where the mood for this album gets all hyped and upbeat again. The song quickly transitions into upbeat dance and electronic music in less than 4 seconds. At the 0:03 second duration mark is where the electric synths and thick beats instantly kick in. I Wonder is driven by a kick drum, snares, and an array of processed electric synths.

You’re sitting in your room. Looking through the window seeing raindrops falling down and hearing the wind blow. Here are the things you that go on inside your heard when you think about the person you love.: “I wonder where you are.” “I wonder what you do.” “I won’t make it on my own. I need to be with you.”

You wonder these things, “Was our love not strong enough?” “Was our love not strong enough to keep us going on?” “To make you fall like I’m falling for you.” The big question is “Was our love not strong enough to keep us going on to make you fall like I’m falling for you?” .

Days are passing by. You can’t forget about them. The teardrops in you eyes show that you miss them dearly. You wonder where they are.

Follow You serves as a follow-up to I Wonder and picks up where that song left off. Follow You is about wanting to be that person you love.

You wrote a letter hoping the person you love will the way they make you feel and what they really mean to you. You dream of the person you love every night. You be with them wherever they may go. You want to follow them.

The first half the song explains how so.

[Verse 1]
I wrote a letter
And I hope that you will see
The way you make me feel
And what you really mean to me

[Pre-Chorus]
Every night I dream of you
I wonder where you are
I look outside, into the sky
I see you waving on a star

[Chorus]
I wanna be with you
I wanna follow you
I wanna be with you wherever you may go
I wanna be with you
I wanna follow you
I wanna be with you wherever you may go
I wanna be with you
I wanna follow you
I wanna be with you wherever you may go
I wanna be with you
I wanna follow you
I wanna be with you wherever you may go

You try to call and patch things up with them. They say making up is not easy to do. Verse 2 gives us some insight about the phone call.

[Verse 2]
I tried to call
And make it up with you
But you keep on saying
It’s not an easy thing to do

Cry is another song which calms down the mood for this album. A theme of sadness is what is inside of the song Cry. The song explains the deep feeling of love.

You still wonder why did the person you love say goodbye. They let you stand here all alone on your own. The pain inside you heart is tearing you apart.

Verse 1 explains the pain of being alone.

[Verse 1]
Now I still wonder why did you say goodbye
You let me stand here all alone
The pain inside my heart, it’s tearing me apart
Cause now I stand here on my own

Now you cry yourself to sleep. Only that person is what you need. “We can make it if we try.” That is what you tell yourself. It’s to the point where you are nowhere without them. You don’t know what to do. You don’t understand why they left. You still wonder why.

Pray is a spiritual love song about how you pray for the one you to be at your side. This is where the mood for the album gets all hyped and upbeat again. The song quickly transitions into upbeat dance and electronic music.

It makes you cry. So many things you have to know because you still care about that person. You miss following them. So you get down on your knees and pray for them. You pray that they were there lying in your arms instead of being far away.

The praying starts during the chorus. Read these lyrics.

[Chorus]
Now I pray on my knees and I look at the stars
That you would be here laying down in my arms
I pray on my knees for you
Now I pray on my knees and I look at the stars
That you would be here laying down in my arms
I pray on my knees for you

[Chorus 2]
I pray on my knees
I pray on my knees
For you

You uses more beats and less synths. However both the beats and synths manage to stand out at the same time despite being played at different paces and different times. True electronic music fans will appreciate the lush sounds of this lovely futuristic electronic soundscape.

You might think that Heaven is another song which calms down the mood for this album. However that is not the case. The song is an upbeat electronic song. The song sounds very similar to a Moby song. Of course Lasgo was influenced by the sounds of dance, pop, and electronic music when writing, composing, and programming Heaven.

Here is the breakdown of how the instrumentation arrangements are laid out. Now the first 38 seconds consists of a drum kit and electric synths. For the first 14 seconds, the song is driven by snares, a kick drum, and a cymbals kit. Angelic electric synths start to kick in at the 0:16 mark in the song. Bass and shakers come into the mix after the 0:43 mark.

Sometimes it’s hard to find out that person who you thought loved you did not love you. That person has used you. They didn’t care about you. This leaves you to wonder were you right or wrong. Still you need them forever. Not just for a night.

That person you love is an angel sent from heaven above. They took your pain away. Still you feel lonely and empty inside.

Don’t Belong 2 U uses more synths than of the other songs on this album. The song is about anguish, being hurt, and emotional pain.

Cloud Surfers uses a handful of vocal samples of an electronic soundscape which is composed of synths, beats, bass, guitars, and shakers. The song is an instrumental. True electronic music fans will appreciate the lush sounds of an electronic soundscape.

Feelings serves as the emotional closer for the album.

I rate this album 5/5*****!!
