Review: The Dayton Family – TDF Demo

The Dayton Family – TDF Demo was one of the hardest Flint rap albums from 1992. The Dayton Family showed Flint, Michigan that they didn’t mess around with songs such as Don’t Fuck With Shoestring, Bloodbath On Dayton Ave, U Better Learn The Game, and Big Mac 11. So you know The Dayton Family don’t play. This is gangsta rap at its best and gangsta rap at its finest.

This album was released only in Flint, Michigan back in 1992 on cassette only. All of the copies have the words “TDF DEMO” written on the spine of the insert. The TDF Demo demo tape has 17 tracks. This is the original demo. Now the skips and poor quality are all of what some people had of this cassette. Not surprisingly since a majority of the tracks were recorded in low quality format on ancient technology.

Some versions of the TDF Demo have the Scarface style intro called TDF Intro and other versions don’t. The original version with 18 tracks did not have the TDF Intro. The 1993 version with 18 tracks had the TDF Intro.

This dark esoteric and eerie epic intro is one hell of an intro (introduction) and is one hell of an opener. The intro uses a Halloween sounding soundscape similar to ICP, House of Krazees, and Top Authority.

The intro explains who the members of The Dayton Family are. They are 3 hard motherfuckers born and raised in Flint, Michigan. You’ve got Bootleg is a psychopath killer (psychopath killa) who will oot a key (kilogram) of cocaine in your fucking face, Shoestring the prostitute killer (prostitute killa), and Backstabba the motherfucking pussy grabber. He is known for leaving his victims spreaded all over the fucking world from bits to little pieces.

Murdering people out of cold is what they do for the thrill. Those guys are known for killing families. They’ll kill your whole fucking family. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. Everybody’s gonna die.

Somebody Gettin Dat Azz is about The Dayton Family getting in girl’s asses. Everybody getting somebody. The hook uses turntableism over the sample The Sugarhill Gang – 8th Wonder. The song is goofy sounding overall due to the way Steve Pitts produced the synths.

The version of Somebody Gettin Dat Azz on the original version uses a vocal sample from the 1969 movie Easy Rider which goes, “That’s what it’s all about, man.” followed by a ‘hello’. This is on the original 1992 version with 17 tracks.

Better Known Az A Kilo is about the members of The Dayton Family selling cocaine. They’re pushing eighths and kilograms (kilos) of cocaine. They’re even selling o’s (ounces). You gotta come right in the dope game. The Dayton Family kicks knowledge about the dope game.

This version of Better Known Az A Kilo is different for the remix as the original version does used sustained guitar chords and notes. However both versions do use bass lines and vinyl scratches.

Some of you who are out there reading this might remember the beginning lyrics to Verse 2 which went as follows. “Boomin and I’m zooted/But I never get too ooted/My PO already told me my urine looks polluted” Those were the lyrics he used at the very beginning of Verse 2.

The song called Big Mac 11 came from The Dayton Family demo cassette which was released locally around Flint only in 1992. Big Mac 11 was a song Ira Dorsey (Bootleg) wrote and performed with Shoestring. This is the original Big Mac 11 which used the samples of The D.O.C. – The Formula and Marvin Gaye – Inner City Blues. Not the version on their 2002 album Welcome To The Dope House. Sample clearance issues was one of the reasons why this version of Big Mac 11 was never publicly released.

Now this version of Big Mac 11 was doper and way harder than the version on their 2002 album Welcome To The Dope House. Many people say the original is way harder than the 2002 version.

The Dayton Family comes with a “no holds barred attitude” in an aggressive form on this track and several other tracks of theirs. Any fan of hardcore gangsta rap willing to accept the truth and daily reality will enjoy this track!

Bootleg slipped out the back. KFC is the next fast food restaurant Bootleg hits up with his Big Mac 11 because Colonel Sanders has beef with him. However this KFC location has bullet-proof glass. Bootleg needs employment and refuses to work for McDonald’s. His hands cold and sweaty from all the premeditation. He hit the trigger to his Big Mac 11 and killed someone. People are rushing to escape. 5 people were murdered by Bootleg and his Big Mac 11. He is full of chicken.

Bootleg walked through the door and he commenced to let them bitches have it busting static and reaping havoc with this automatic weapon that he has. People were screaming and hollering hoes cried when they saw him pull it.

Big Mac 11 is back. So let that motherfucker kick for a bit. His Big Mac 11 has got him fiending to rob more fast food restaurant establishments. So fuck Burger King, Taco Bell, and KFC. Get out of his way before you meet his Big Mac 11.

Shoestring is on a ganking spree where he is committing theft. Lights are following him now. So he feels paranoid. The next place he turns to is somebody’s yard. The Big Mac 11 is his bodyguard. He blasted another motherfucker next. That’s the life he lives and chose to live.

Now it’s time for Shoestring to devise another plot for another ganking spree. The Big Mac 11 is the only thing he has got. He’s got another murder story just for you. The next place he robs is a bank. He robbed a woman for her cash. All types of shit are seen after he takes her purse such as credit cards and cash.

Shoestring discusses how he used this woman’s credit card at the ATM machine and walked with cash in these lyrics. Shoestring might have murdered Flint Police officer Harlan Greene and walked away carrying his body in a body back. These lyrics may also serve as a warning to former Flint Police officer Harlan Greene. “I took that teller card to the teller machine/Put that motherfucker in/Walked away with green/Get out my face before you meet Big Mac 11”

The cop killer is back on the streets after serving a 30 year sentence in the penitentiary and is out to look for revenge. He is mad. On Welcome To My Neighborhood, The Dayton Family discusses how rough Flint really was with all the violent crime, drugs, and political corruption with contributing vocals from Ready For The World. The Dayton Family talked their perspective about the city on the track.

When Welcome To My Neighborhood with Ready For The World being recorded and written, Flint, Michigan was in a state of decline due to deindustrialization of the North and Midwest along with urbanization.

The city of Flint was dealing with increasing rates of poverty, increasing rates of homelessness, recidivism, rampant political corruption and a failing education system. But the politicians were too corrupt to actually give a fuck about Flint to actually solve any problems. Flint’s economy was going down in 1992. Even before 1992. That’s the reason shit is the way it is right now currently. The city is and has always been going through hardships.

Of course Welcome To My Neighborhood is more poignant now than it was in 1992 due to the ongoing Flint Water Crisis. The effects of the Flint Water Crisis is absolutely devastating. If people would have taken more action and paid attention to what was happening with Flint, things would have been a lot different then they are now! Welcome To My Neighborhood is still as relevant as it was in 1992. Overall Welcome To My Neighborhood is a King Hood classic.

The city of Flint was once racially segregated by district zoning lines. These district zoning lines were politically structured and altered over the years. These district zoning lines were set up by politicians to keep minorities oppressed. Flint is a place where things are very rough and race matters.

Flint keeps people trapped in an impoverished environment. It is so hard to escape the drugs and violence that plague Flint. He refuses to work hard at a fast food franchise and still be poor. He can’t live in a nice condo as he would still be in the hood.

Welcome To My Neighborhood uses a mixture of Rasta style reggae, old school rap, and urban soul. The Rasta man talking all over the track served as the reggae portion of the track. Ready For The World are the ones singing the chorus and background vocals. Ready For The World singing the chorus and background vocals served as the soul portion.

Jealous Bitches is about how these two fat bitches got jealous of Shoestring because of the success The Dayton Family was having. The Dayton Family cassettes were selling more than dope dealers selling cocaine. He knew these two fat bitches. He knew them bitches were talking about him.

One thing Shoestring did was diss one of the members of Dayton Mafia named Kenny Rogers. He dissed Kenny Rogers for set tripping when he switched gangs from The Dayton Family to Hood Boyz. Shoestring dissed Kenny Rogers saying, “Then you was a Hood Boy/Now you claim Dodgers/You fucking Kenny Rogers/Back in the days you used to be my fucking man/You’re not American so take your ass back to Spain/You’re saying I jacked you for your crack”

Kenny Rogers claimed Shoestring jacked him for his crack which wasn’t true. Which is why Shoestring called him out will dissing him in these lyrics, “You’re saying I jacked you for your crack”. Kenny Rogers and Shoestring fell out over stolen crack and jealousy of The Dayton Family’s success. He even went to the extent of calling Shoestring a sellout.

At the end of the song Shoestring gives shout to the niggaz from King Hood such as his cousin Jake The Flake, Freaky Fred, Orlan, Munchie, and even Randy J of the King Hood Cykoz.

Bloodbath On Dayton Ave is one of more esoteric, violent, and bloody songs on the album with a dark Scarface vibe. It’s one of those dark and eerie tracks. The sound is similar to the album Criminal Background – Blood On The Wall. Bloodbath On Dayton Ave is one of the best songs on the album. Sadly the song was never released due to the bad audio quality.

Shoestring is killing them all. Cutting people with saws. He is cutting feet with saws. He’s got another murder story for you. Shoestring is on a ganking spree where he is committing theft. He broke into a bank. Some nigga snitched on him and now the body of a snitch is locked in a safe. What he was doing was thinking like Ronnie Johns the .44 caliber killer. Shoestring appreciated every fucking thing Ronnie Johns the .44 caliber killer did.

He is never ever outdated. Nor is he perpetrated. Now he’s back in 1992 and 1993. And now you motherfuckers hate it. Killing babies overseas. Dropping Arabs to their knees. Shoestring shot Noreaga in his back and now he’s begging please.

But that’s okay since tooting cocaine was his fucking sport. Now he is hearing witnesses testify about his crimes he committed. Law and order are his enemy. The court has Shoestring serving another sentence because he raped Jayne Kennedy. But Shoestring had a grudge against the judge. So he put a bullet in the judge. Then he ran out through the courtroom doors. He spotted a hoe and put a gun to her head. What he did to her was jack her for a pencil. A police officer came by to break up the violence. Shoestring shot the police officer.

Now he’s seeing visions of a motherfucking bloodbath. The business he robbed next was a liquor store. He made everyone hit the floor. Backstabba watched the door. A keg was stolen. He’s back with a new and improved way of criminal mischief. He hears this about this shit on the news. Police think Shoestring is a joke. He’ll let his pistol smoke to prove them wrong. He saw a man and killed him while lurking in a caravan. Ronnie Johns appreciated every fucking thing Shoestring did. Now he sees a bloodbath on Dayton Ave!

Here’s what happened to the other niggaz on the set of Dayton Ave.

Book got a diploma and went to Oklahoma to attend a university. They sent him back home since they said he had ammonia. They say he was an oothead wanted by the feds.

Pissing on floors, cussing out hoes, and starting trash fires. He was living a dramatic life by the time he was 5. At the age of 10 he was smoking and packing 44’s with his friends. Best believe it’s gang related. Niggaz are knocking on his door asking for a double up.

Bootleg gets sent to prison. His girlfriend doesn’t write letters to him. He believes she is fucking his brother without his knowledge behind his back. However he pays that business no mind because her mother is writing letters to him. Drug abuse is what he has done to himself. September 5, 1988 is his release date from prison. Niggaz on the set are losing bets because his rocks are bigger. Bootleg is a ghetto nigga. Bloodbath on Dayton Ave! Down on Dayton it’s gonna be a fucking bloodbath!

Back On Dayton Ave picks up where Bloodbath On Dayton Ave left off. The song was never released due to the low quality which is part of the audio quality issues with this song.

The song has the iconic memorable lyrics “I’ve got my hood locked down on Dayton Avenue”. These lyrics were used in a song by King Hood Cykoz called Livin’ In King Hood from their self-titled demo that given out around Flint in 1992.

Shoestring is kicking it with Backstabber and Bootleg at the corner store called Dayton Food Market located on 2502 Dupont Street in Flint, Michigan. This is the corner store which faces Dope Dayton Ave (West Dayton Street). Kicking that shit once again. Shoestring is back on the corner of West Dayton Street & Dupont Street again. Shoestring is a cop killer. That is why police officers don’t want to fuck with him. He needs some money because he is in a ditch with a hole inside.

So he calls up his boy Jerry on a payphone because he needs some cocaine. After receiving some cocaine, Shoestring heads back to his set which is The Dayton Family/Dayton Mafia. Afterwards he grabs an uzi and a shot gun from his residence.

You see Shoestring is a criminal with a criminal personality. He is seeing faces he has never seen before. The set is bumping and yayo is leaving fast. A fiend snatched Shoestring’s yayo but Shoestring’s uzi caught with the fiend fast. The fiend got blasted by the uzi. All Shoestring saw was blood.

He is pushing eighths, selling o’s (ounces), and dealing kilograms (kilos) of cocaine on the North Side of Flint which is where he is from. Business is booming like Boomin’ Records. Shoestring is sitting back in a crack house getting paid.

Suddenly he hears a gun shot and realizes he is getting sprayed. That’s the second time. Somebody took his dope and money. They think he is dead but he is really alive. So he shoots back. Then he jumps out the window and jumps a fence. Next he jumped into a car with Ray Ray and he hit the gas. Somebody is chasing them over some shit that Officer Harlon Green did. That person is dead because Shoestring shot him.

Shoestring calls out specific Flint Police officers by name in this song such as Harlon Green and H. P. Kendall in the lyrics. “Harlon is my enemy/Kendall ain’t no kin to me”. Shoestring view former police officer Harlon Green as an enemy because Harlon Green was also a known crack fiend who stole drugs from drug sellers and drug users. Ironically his job involves arresting both drug sellers and drug users.

Officer H. P. Kendall and Officer Harlon Green were pulling a raid on Dayton Street. Shoestring is the hunter and Officer Harlon Green is his prey. So they know he’s straight fucked up. They should have known how Shoestring was cut.

Bootleg is back. A lot of hoes are gonna die today. The AK is popping and he is killing hoes the messy bloody way. Cops get killed just for simply riding through Dayton Avenue. Bitches get raped and rookies die in King Hood and Dayton Hood. You gotta be and gotta be hard on Dayton Street. This is because killas are packing heavy heat.

Don’t fuck around on Dayton Avenue because that is his territory. There ain’t no bitch in Bootleg. He is a killa packing heavy heat on Death Street which is better known as Dayton Street. He is a homicidal maniac with money and the power too.

It all started back in the day when Bootleg was rolling jacks. He wasn’t selling bud but was instead selling crack. Bootleg was known to pack that heavy steel at 13. He was young and in the dope game. Cocaine is what he got heavily addicted to. And he was running with Ray Ray, A Lee, and Eric Durkins too. They started a business booming weight and selling rocks. Word got back to the cops. The Vice Squad is rolling heavy and is close by. Bootleg shot and killed some cops that were on the Vice Squad. They soon ran knowing they couldn’t fuck with him.

Got Us On The Run explains the escapades Bootleg got into while he was out on the run from law enforcement. He was on the run from law enforcement when he wrote and recorded this song with Steve Pitts. At the time he was facing indictment. The bass lines and chords sample Hi-C – I’m Not Your Puppet. The song has a chorus with a catchy melody which goes “They got us on the run/They got us on the run/Run run run run run”.

A federal indictment case has got Shoestring on the run. But that’s okay because Shoestring will kill law enforcement officials with his shot gun. He’s kicking it with the Dorsey’s down on Dayton Street. He’s not a bitch. Enemies are something he has which requires him to pack heat. Here come the police. They saw Bootleg and called for backup. Flint Police will get jacked up by Shoestring. Him and Bootleg jumped a fence.

3 days pass and The Dayton Family are chilling in Matt’s caravan. However they did not have dope or guns on their possession. Flint Police attacked and jacked them up on Clio Road which is on the West Side of Flint. Flint Police had their guns drawn out on The Dayton Family. Matt’s caravan gets searched by Flint Police. They wanted Ira Dorsey (Bootleg). Flint Police have got The Dayton Family on the run.

Bootleg explained why he was on the run from law enforcement from a federal indictment with these lyrics. These lyrics explained the legal drama behind his court case. “Bootleg on the R.U.N./Fuckin every now and then/Had a dope case/My court appointed didn’t try to win”

The Dayton Family drops knowledge on the game of sex on You Better Learn The Game.

Bootleg woke up a little late at about 12 PM. Phil Donahue is on TV but Bootleg does not listen to him. He has a whole lot to do but not a whole lot of time. The first place he when to report to the office of his probation officer because he misbehaved. He left the office of his probation officer because it was time to get blowed. His little brother keeps that weed that makes his brain explode. That joint he rolled up went away too quickly. So Bootleg rolled up a billy blunt because he ain’t with that shit.

Now he’s puffing on a billy blunt feeling rigid and tense. Next he blew a horn at a hoe named Tasha which did not make any sense whatsoever. He pulled a u-turn and went back to her because he was in the mood for love. She shook her head and got in. He dropped off his boy off. And now he’s mad because Bootleg took the condom he had. Now Bootleg and this hoe are headed to the pad. Tasha asked where Bootleg’s friend was. He wanted a double dick mission. So he goes back to retrieve his boy. This bitch Tasha was feeling on Bootleg’s dick even though they have not made it to the pad.

Bootleg tells her to have a seat and relax. Bootleg tells her, “Come in and have a seat. Girl, relax your feet. I’ve got a very tricky friend that I want you to meet. Hey, Mr. Dick, this is Tasha. Tasha, this here is Dick. Now that ya’ll got acquainted, ya’ll should fuck right quick.” They are fucking in an orgy. Shoestring wants some action too.

Shoestring is sitting in his crib with nothing else to do. He’s watching a movie on his television with an erect penis at a 1:45. He picks up the phone thinking of a bitch to call. His beeper went off when a number came through. So he calls the number. A bitch named Lisa answers. He tells Lisa to bring her ass over. The plan he has is to run up in her like a Rover.

Matt Hinkle (Backstabba) ain’t no joke. He don’t give a fuck about the cops because he doesn’t sell dope. He saw this bitch down on Dayton Street screaming my name. Now you know he has game. Her boyfriend gets mad when Matt talks to her. So he attempts to run Matt down with his car. Matt puts some lead in his ass.
