Review: Sons Of Funk – The Game Of Funk

Sons Of Funk – The Game Of Funk was the album which brought No Limit Records into the R&B/soul market back in the late 1990s. The songs Pushin’ Inside You and I Got The Hook-Up! are the songs that made this album an overnight success and helped No Limit Records become a mainstay in music. This album is what helped No Limit Records become a mainstay in the R&B/soul market along with Mr. Magic and Mercedes.

The album Sons Of Funk – The Game Of Funk is laced with slow jams perfect for a romantic night and slow jams for the bedrooms. Funk meets R&B/soul on The Game Of Funk. The Game Of Funk is a product from an era of great R&B/soul music. This album has an Earth, Wind & Fire feel to it.

Now some people believed Master P being all over the album is what prevented this album from being a classic masterpiece. They believed his raps ruined some of the songs and took away that soulful R&B flavor the album had. They thought and believed that Master P had no place being on the album as they felt he ruined some of the songs.

She knows, that he knows, that the sex is gonna be good tonight. That is what Pushin’ Inside You. Pushin’ Inside You was the sexually explicit romantic bedroom jam which helped the album become successful and bought No Limit Records into the R&B/soul market. This song is what helped No Limit Records become a mainstay in the R&B/soul market along with Mr. Magic and Mercedes.

She knows, that he knows, that the sex is gonna be good tonight. He can feel her juices dripping down her body. He asked her is he is worthy of her time. He can simply feel his penis pushing inside of her. Going deeper and deeper. “Sho’ feels damn good to me when I’m pushin’ inside of you.” is what he tells her. Can’t explain the way it feels.

Okay enough of that foreplay. Something’s telling me that your body’s soaking wet. So here’s my love.
Am I qualified in your eyes? Let’s go all night. Lay you by my side. I’ll let you light my fire. I can see it in your eyes.

Makin Luv to My Bitch explains to guys how your girl has your back and is support more than your friends and so-called boys do. People don’t realize that most of the time that your girl has your back than your friends do. If a guy is good to a girl, he loves and fucks her. They have a good life.

Beats By The Pound produced many hits including this song. Makin Luv to My Bitch is an interpolation of Prince – She’s Always In My Hair. This sounds so smooth. The song has a soulful melancholy groove.

Side to Side is a song about the freaky sexual positions people get into when they make love and have sexual intercourse. We’re gonna go front, back, and side to side. You better get ready because it’s on tonite. Jump into the caddy as Sons Of Funk give you the freaky, deaky, zeeky on those freaky positions.

They’ve got some lovin’ body rubin’ which is enough to blow your mind. Erotic pleasures but I don’t believe you 69. No need to fantasize. I turn you out. You turn me up. Baby it’s going down. I feel your water. I love it when you make that sound. Panties go droppin and legs are up in the air. There ain’t no stoppin once it’s on. Where we gonna go? Front, back and side to side.

I rate this album 3/5***!

Review: Lady Wray – Smiling / Make Me Over

The Lady Wray – Smiling / Make Me Over was one of the most positive soul singles of 2016. The single serves as a as a reminder to keep our heads up and to keep a smile on our faces in order to deal with whatever life has planned for us. Bubblegum pop meets gritty classic soul.

Smiling is an instant feel good anthem serving as a reminder to keep our heads up and to keep a smile on our faces in order to deal with whatever life has planned for us described by Big Crown Records and Nicole Wray. We all need to let go and move on in life. Leon Michels & Thomas Brenneck contribute in terms of production. Bubblegum pop meets gritty classic soul.

Make Me Over is a down and out tune. A lusty tale. Nicole finds herself asking for a little help so she can get a break from being strapped for cash promising to take care of her man as soon as her check comes in. She lets her guard down during the duration of the song. Her expensive taste leads to empty pockets. Make Me Over is a gritty soul song.

I rate this single 5/5*****!

Review: Lighter Shade of Brown – Layin’ In The Cut

Mercury dropped the ball on promoting the Lighter Shade of Brown – Layin’ In The Cut album because this album was overlooked as a result in lack of promotion. LSOB’s career did not last long as a result of the lack of promotion despite having a hot song constantly played in rotation on airwaves. The album did not chart very as expected. So Mercury dropped LSOB from the label and their recording contract.

Latin hip hop duo Lighter Shade of Brown takes us on a ride while layin’ in the cut on Dip Into My Ride. We dip into their ride and they take us on the other side. We enjoy a taste of good life on this joint. It’s late night and LSOB is living the night life like Letterman. We later find ourselves rollin’ down the strip. From here, we just sit back, chill, and enjoy the cool breeze.

Funk meets hip hop on Where Ya At. LSOB drops mad funk in their scriptures in terms of lyrics resulting breaking grounds. Where Ya At breaks solid ground. LSOB gets down to the nitty gritty with their touch of Latin fusion in their raps. Lighter Shade of Brown took us on a ride while layin’ in the cut on this LSOB album right here.

Talking’ ‘Bout Gettin’ It On is a perfect song for you and your love when you want to get into the mood. The song Talking’ ‘Bout Gettin’ It On is perfect for a light night romance rendezvous for your lover in bed. The Marvin Gaye – Let’s Get It On is a perfect sample to interpolate and sample in a song such as this. The percussion ensemble is very light in terms of musical presence. Communication is key in a relationship both physically and mentally. Overall, Talking’ ‘Bout Gettin’ It On is a perfect song for you and your partner to get in the mood with.

Hey DJ is the LSOB anthem that became an international hit song across airwaves on radio stations across Earth. Rap meets Latin and dance music on Hey DJ. Hey DJ is a percussion heavy ridden dance radio ballad. Hey DJ was a hot song constantly played in rotation on airwaves back in the 1990s. In other words, Hey DJ dominated the radio waves later climbing to the single digits on the BillBoard Charts.

I rate this album 4/5****.

Review: Lil Rob – Natural High

Sureño rapper Lil Rob graces us with another firme album called Natural High from Low Profile Records, Familia Records, and Aries Music. This album was released around the 1999/2000 period. Lil Rob uses a mixture of oldies, soul, and funk on this album as both genres are prevalent in the Chicano rap community. Natural High is considered by Lil Rob fans and Chicano rap fans to be a classic oldies masterpiece. Natural High is considered to be another one of Lil Rob’s greatest albums along with Crazy Life, RIP, Can’t Keep A Good Man Down, Neighborhood Music, and High Till I Die. Natural High is something for the chicos and chicas to enjoy. Roberto Flores aka Lil Rob is known for his gangster voice in his sick flows and firme beats.

Lil Rob took all old school beats and added new tight hard lyrics to No Soy De Ti. No Soy De Ti is a fine example of Chicano rap as the whole track is spoken in the Spanish language. In fact, this track is somewhat the most overwhelming overlooked track off the Natural High album. No Soy De Ti is a firme track.

Natural High is an ode to marijuana which is why Natural High is appropriately titled. Lil Rob makes marijuana highly publicized on this track. His love for marijuana is what he raps about. His love for marijuana is what makes the track great. Life is wicked.

It’s throwback time down memory lane with I Remember. Lil Rob takes the listener on a trip down memory lane into memories of the past. The lyrics are tight and considered firme. His lyrics are what make this one tight. After all, Lil Rob is best known for his lyrics overall.

The ones who talk just don’t know that you can lose a good thing. If you are ungrateful and take everything for granted. You can loose everything just like that. The ones who talk just don’t know on the track Those Who Talk.

No One To Depend On tells us don’t trust nobody but yourself. You just can’t trust anyone. Trust yourself. It’s mostly about emotional self-reliance. Don’t let anyone put you down emotionally. Keep your head up.

I rate this album 5/5*****!!

Review: Snoop Dogg – Da Game Is To Be Sold

Moving to No Limit in 1997 for Snoop Dogg proved to improve his musical career. Da Game Is To Be Sold was a departure from his two previous West Coast sounding album. This album was a lot more commercial sounding which is due to that Southern rap sound and crossover pop appeal Snoop Dogg himself had. This was thanks to the all-in-your-face production with those thick loud beats and heavy bass produced by Beats By The Pound.

Thanks to Pen & Pixel Graphics, the album stood out with that bling bling and jewelry in Snoop Dogg’s name on the top. The title at the bottom of the album cover is gold with bling bling! That’s what made it go platinum. Pen & Pixel Graphics always stands out to everyone in a good way.

Woof! proved to be a smash hit! This was thanks to the all-in-your-face production with those thick loud beats and heavy bass produced by Beats By The Pound. Slow Down was Woof! revisited as the song used the same production technique and production style as Woof! did. But Slow Down was not as much as a success as Woof! was.

I rate this album 4/5****.

Review: Snoop Dogg – Tha Doggfather

Snoop Dogg’s Tha Doggfather album is the worst 3/5*** star album in the history of music. Not many tracks were that enjoyable. The only good tracks were Vapors, 2001, Sixx Minutes, and Doggfather. Honestly the only good tracks were Vapors and Doggfather. The album nearly become lost in the turmoil and tragic death of the slain 2Pac. What was missing was Dr. Dre’s production on this Snoop Dogg album. Death Row Records and Snoop Dogg really dropped the ball here.

Albums sales proved that differently. The album sold less than his debut album, Doggystyle, did. The album turned out to be a disappointment among Snoop Dogg fans despite high sales in the first 3 weeks or so. Constant promotion in magazines, albums, flyers, or interviews could not save this album from being mediocre.

I rate this album 3/5***.

Review: Master P – No Limit Chronicles Lost Tape

Master P’s No Limit Chronicles Lost Tape was used to celebrate the release of the 5 part Docu-Series on No Limit Chronicles on BET which aired on July 29, 2020. Super producer BlaqnMild graced P’s album with his high quality production. This was the highly anticipated album of 2020. Master P keeps things fresh by discussing relevant and up to date content with today’s audience.

The Colonel of The Tank shares game about preparation, ownership and education with everyone including professional athletes and entertainers on Need To Know. “If you gettin’ money this the shit you need to know.” He kept real and keeps telling the truth. This is the realest shit Master P ever wrote and ever spoke. Rap is missing real lyricism like this.

This is the shit they don’t want you to know. But if you gettin’ money, this is the shit you need to know.

If you don’t want to hear the truth, then just skip past this one. Keep telling lies because the truth hurts. Musicians signed a deal and then they lie about their net worth. You can’t make Forbes and have a 360 deal. I know Everybody’s trying to get that to get that 80/20 deal like Master P did and is trying to get that Rocawear deal.

Record labels and sporting agencies give us one percent and we think we own the team. Musicians signed a record deal but the money don’t match their dream. Then they put these rookies against each other. They used to be homeboys and now they are trying to to kill each other. Musicians even read when they sign these deals.

This is the realist shit Master P ever spoke about income inequality. “While Richard Branson is having fun flying in space/These artists are out here starving and catching a case”

And when you hot, they gon’ let you use their house
And when you not, that’s the day they kick you out
While Richard Branson is having fun flying in space
These artists are out here starving and catching a case
I don’t know what they did to Mase
But I heard Ciroc gave Puffy some cake
And these hoes and these jewels will be a young nigga’s downfall

Sporting agencies give players $50 million dollars a game and then they lock them into contracts they can’t get out of. This happens a lot in the sports industry. “They giving like 50 mil’ for playin’ roundball/Then throw your name in the paper/And make it easy access for the haters”

Athletes got financial advisors just to pay their bills. Dre hit with Beats and now every rapper wants that deal. How you gonna make 50 mil’ and go kill a nigga? These athletes use too many steroids. Now these athletes want to be rappers. These rappers make a little money and want to be trappers. Buy a phantom and don’t have a house. These niggas backwards from the inside out. And y’all want to be Kobe ’cause he own the team. Rappers are losing to these sponsors and endorsements. Reality shows think they are creating stars but in reality they are making monsters

Why are we negotiating 360 deals when there is so much technology out there today? We could do our own shit. And why you athletes hookin’ up with business people that never even made money before? To watch your money?
Shit don’t make no sense.

Invest like a 1/3 of your money just in case you need that for a rainy day. You feel me? These strip clubs and cars don’t hold no value. That’s a bad investment. You fall down, you get back up. That’s how hustlers do it. And if you could help your people, you help them. You don’t let them starve. You never know who might be the next you. You get a lot of friends when you got money. But when you don’t have shit, ain’t nobody gon’ fuck with you. Don’t let this be you. You’re never too old or too young to be able to make music or do what you want to do. Have you ever seen a rich PD or on-air personality? anybody ever check their salary?

Get your shit in the streets to your people. Get out there and hustle. Find you somebody with an education or a job. Somebody that could help you. Stop fuckin’ with all these broke hoes. Say you hang around a bunch of broke muthafuckas then you broke. You hang around rich muthafuckas then you rich.

Believe is about believing in yourself in order to become successful. Master P says that hard work is the key to success when most people don’t believe in you. Believing in yourself is the positive Master P is trying to convey in this song. He says that hard work is the key to success when most people don’t believe in you.

Super producer BlaqnMild graced this song with his high quality production and modernized beats. That is how he makes the song sound relevant and modern with contemporary culture. The Ice Cream Man and BlaqnMild stay reinventing themselves.

Peewee Longway and Master P explain how they get they hustle on with their song Cooked Up. Peewee Longway got the hook up and so does Master P.

Still Remember” is another classic about the struggle and the pain. The song explains how to appreciate success and not let success go over your head. The Ice Cream Man stays reinventing himself. Blaqnmild brings out the rhythm for the song. He brings some flavor to modern contemporary culture.

I rate this album 5/5*****!

Review: Lady Wray – Queen Alone

Nicole Wray returns again as Lady Wray for 2016 on Big Crown Records! Leon Michels lent a hand in producing some of the tracks. His signature style and sound in terms of production are heard throughout the album. The gritty rnb sound represents the sound of this album.

Nicole Wray does it again on Do It Again! She sings to her hearts content straight from her soul. The horns fanfare set an ultimatum for this single being one of the high points with her singing. It represents the breathtaking soul saving return of Lady. Anyone notice how the drum production is heavy? Classic old soul meets gritty rnb sound on Do It Again. One has to wonder if Do It Again has an emotional back-story. Do It Again is about a failed relationship that Nicole is willing to get back into. Complexities of love are difficult to understand not to mention staggering.

The guitar solo performed for In Love is beautiful! The acoustic rhythmic guitar used is simply beautiful. Classic soul meets the new neo soul sound on the song In Love. Her singing on this song sounds very similar in comparison to Ella Fitzgerald. Nicole’s in love so don’t mess it up. Love is not a good thing to ruin. Complexities of love are difficult for many to understand. In Love seems very similar to a Bill Withers song.

Smiling is an instant feel good anthem serving as a reminder to keep our heads up and to keep a smile on our faces in order to deal with whatever life has planned for us described by Big Crown Records and Nicole Wray.

Underneath My Feet is a happy love song about how Nicole Wray let her guard down when she let a man sweep Nicole underneath her feet by his love. It’s another gritty soul song.

Guilty is a Nicole Wray solo based off of her own life experiences. She wrote Guilty about her brother being incarcerated which is also what this song is based on. Nicole missed her brother during his sentence of incarceration. She wrote this song herself. A bluesy chorus represents the vocals of Guilty.

Let It Go was a great way to end this album. Let It Go deals with how to let go of the internal drama in your life. It’s better to let the drama go. We all need to let go and move on in life.

I rate this album 5/5*****!!

Review: Lady Wray – Do It Again/In Love

Nicole Wray returned again as Lady Wray for 2016 on Big Crown Records! As the years pass by through time, both songstress members improve their craft in singing. This 45 single is the case otherwise known. Leon Michels lent a hand in producing these two tracks. His signature style and sound in terms of production are heard throughout the single. The gritty rnb sound represents the sound of this single.
